Understanding SUFE and Perthes in Children
What are SUFE and Perthes
Slipped Upper Femoral Epiphysis (SUFE) and Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease (Perthes) are two conditions affecting the hip joint in children. Both involve disruptions to the normal growth of the hip, leading to pain and potential long-term complications. Early diagnosis and proper management are key to a successful recovery.
SUFE: A Slipped Femoral Head
SUFE occurs when the upper part of the femur (thigh bone) slips off the ball of the hip joint. This condition typically affects children during puberty, often those who are overweight or experiencing rapid growth. Symptoms include hip and or knee pain, limping, and difficulty walking.
A suspected SUFE is treated as an urgent referral that day for an X-ray. If this is left untreated can lead to long term hip problems later in life.
Perthes: A Disruption of Blood Flow to the Hip Joint
Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease (Perthes) is a condition where the blood supply to the femoral head is temporarily disrupted. This causes the bone to soften and collapse, leading to hip pain, limping, and limited range of motion. Perthes most commonly affects children between 4 and 10 years old and can result in permanent joint damage if not addressed early.
