Osgood-Schlatter Disease: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options
Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) is a common knee condition that affects adolescents, particularly those who are active in sports. It is often known as growing pains and so many teens struggle when they don’t have to. The good news is we see lots of cases like this in our clinic and get our patients back to their best and playing their sport in no time.
Osgood-Schlatter disease occurs when the growth plate at the top of the shinbone (tibia) becomes irritated or inflamed. It causes pain and swelling just below the knee, where the patellar tendon attaches to the tibia, as the bones grow faster than the muscles and tendons can adapt.
The main symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter disease include:
- Swelling: The area may appear swollen and tender to the touch
- Pain during sport: The pain often worsens with activities such as running, jumping, or climbing stairs
- Stiffness: The knee may feel stiff, and there may be a noticeable bump or lump at the site of inflammation.
- Limited range of motion: The knee may feel tight, and movement might be restricted due to pain.
Causes of Osgood-Schlatter Disease
- Growth Spurts: Rapid growth in children and adolescents can cause the bones, tendons, and muscles to grow at different rates, increasing the risk of irritation in the knee.
- High-Impact Sports: Activities that involve frequent running, jumping, or sudden changes of direction can put additional stress on the knee joint.
- Tight Muscles: Tight quadriceps (thigh muscles) can increase tension on the patellar tendon, exacerbating the condition.
Physiotherapy or Osteopathy plays a crucial role in the treatment of Osgood-Schlatter disease. At The Back and Body Clinic, our experienced team can treat symptoms through a combination of manual therapy techniques, exercises, and education. Our goal is to relieve pain, restore proper knee function, and help your child get back to their active lifestyle.
