Tendon Injection
Tendon and tendon sheath injections are a non-surgical procedure that involves injecting medicine into or around an irritated tendon to reduce pain and inflammation. Tendons are the fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones, and they can become irritated or sensitised over time due to; overuse, injury and (unfortunately!) aging.
There are several types of medicine that can be used for tendon injections, including:
- Corticosteroids: These are strong anti-inflammatory medications that can reduce swelling and pain in the tendon.
- Rich Pla Pla (RPR): RPR is a concentrate of platelets and growth factors that can help the body heal and regenerate damaged tissue.
Tendon injections are performed on an outpatient basis, and the procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes. The doctor will then use ultrasound or X-ray guidance to accurately place the needle into the tendon.
After the injection, you may experience some pain and swelling, but this should subside within a few days. You may be advised to rest the affected limb for a period of time, and to avoid activities that may put stress on the tendon. After around 2 weeks you will come back in to see your physio to progress your recovery and to help the tendon heal stronger than before!
The benefits of tendon injections include:
- Reduced pain: Injections can help to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with damaged tendons.
- Improved function: By reducing pain and inflammation, tendon injections can help to improve range of motion and mobility in the affected limb.
- Reduced need for surgery: For some people, tendon injections can provide sufficient relief from symptoms and avoid the need for more invasive procedures, such as surgery.
Overall, tendon and tendon sheath injections can be an effective treatment option for people with irritated or inflamed tendons. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort in your tendons, it is important to speak with your therapist to determine if this procedure may be right for you
