Neck Wear and Tear Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is often referred to as neck wear and tear, which can sound awful, but don’t worry, it sounds worse than it is! At The Back and Body Clinic, we spend most of our time reassuring patients that come to us worried about their diagnosis of Osteoarthritis of the neck (Spondylosis). We often begin by explaining that neck wear and tear is actually part of the natural aging process (it’s where the discs, facet joints and vertebra change as we age) but it certainly doesn’t have to mean a lifetime of pain. Sometimes, during this changing (osteoarthritic) process, usually as a result of either ‘over doing it’ or bad posture, it can cause pain and stiffness. Once they are painful, neck movements can feel agonising when moved into certain positions (like when turning your head to reverse the car) or in worse cases, can ache all the time, even during the smallest of movements. It can also cause pain in the back and can refer down the arm.

The good news is, our therapists see this day in and day out and with the right treatment, advice, exercises and good posture techniques, most Osteoarthritis of the neck (Spondylosis) quietens down so much you won’t even know it’s there anymore! And, you’ll soon be reversing the car without noticing any stiffness in the neck!
