We have been using injections at the Clinic to help people in pain for over seven years and our injection therapists get absolutely incredible results!! People are often told that an injection is very painful and that it just masks the pain. We totally disagree. An injection when given by someone who has the right skills, experience and knowledge is generally not too painful at all and can work absolute wonders to help you on your journey to a full recovery.
We are simply not motivated by giving people a ‘quick fix’. We use these injections to create a window of opportunity to help you address the underlying cause of the pain coming on in the first place. With many years of experience and huge success time and time again, we know that if we can apply a model of an injection followed by the right rehabilitation, we have a very good chance of fixing your problem, long term!!
We are also very competitively priced and can bring injections to you at a much cheaper rate than hospitals that have the added over-head costs of expensive theatres.
When should an injection be considered?
Is your pain at such a level that it is stopping you from being able to do you rehab exercises? Is your injury simply not improving? Do you have swelling/effusion in your joint? Is the pain affecting your ability to function day to day?

Cortisone (Steroid) Injection
So here is the technical bit; Cortisone is not just a pain-relieving medication, but rather works by minimizing the body’s reaction to inflammation. When the inflammation is lessened, the pain is also. By injecting the medicine directly into the inflamed area, such as a knee or shoulder joint for example, we can have a major effect at significantly reducing or completely getting rid of your pain. These injections have minimal side effects… although our therapist will discuss all of these with you prior to administering the injection so you are fully informed and give full consent to the treatment.
Hyaluronic Acid Injection
Hyaluronic acid injection is used to treat particularly knee but also other joint pain caused by osteoarthritis. It works by acting like a lubricant and shock absorber in the joints and helps the joints to work properly. It is a substance that is naturally in your joints but has found to be reduced by approximately three times the levels it should be in osteoarthritic joints. There has been lots of high level research studies on it and it is often found to offer a longer lasting effect to a cortisone injection.
Prolotherapy/Sclerosant Therapy
Sometimes ligaments can be overstretched, or even torn and not support the joint adequately. This ‘instability’ may put abnormal stresses on the joints and lead to recurrent pain. Prolotherapy involves the injection of a dextrose based substance directly onto the ligament. The ligament reacts to the dextrose and makes thicker healthy collagen fibres increasing stability.
Aspiration
An aspiration is a procedure to remove fluid from the space around a joint or a bursa for example using a needle and syringe. This is usually done under a local anesthetic to relieve swelling. If the fluid does not look haelthy as it should do, the fluid can be sent off for analysis to diagnose a disorder or problem. The main joint we tend to aspirate is a knee, and we will generally routinely aspirate the knee immediately before we inject it with cortisone or hyaluronic acid.
